Making Nature 1991

My MFA Thesis from the School of Visual Arts, NY 1991

Shall we with pains erect a heaven of blue glass over ourselves, though when it is done we shall be sure to gaze still at the true ethereal heaven far above, as if the former were not?
Henry David Thoreau

How our environment looks is the result of myriad forces reflecting the interests of individuals, governments, and corporations.

How we look at our environment is the result of our direct experience and the mediated experiences of others.

Individually, the photographs in Making Nature depict various sites in which elements of our ideology towards nature are expressed. Grouped together in Triptychs and diptychs, the images play off each other, attempting to widen the reading of each individual image, and to help me understand where my ideas of nature come from and how they play out in my everyday life.
